St. Thomas is home to world renowned shopping and is one of the largest shopping hubs in the Caribbean. Hundreds of duty free shops line the streets and alleys of the capital, Charlotte Amalie. Multiple buildings in Havensight, where most cruise ships dock house fabulous shops and boutiques. Yacht Haven Grande offers high end luxury shopping with an incredible view of the harbor, however, some of the shops here are not duty-free. The best buys on St. Thomas include jewelry, alcohol, china, crystal, perfumes, art and clothing. Watches and cameras are advertised as great deals, but a lot of the time they’re priced the same as on the mainland, so do your homework. Keep in mind that most shops in St. Thomas are closed on Sunday (unless there is a cruise ship in port), so plan your shopping for another day.
Nearly all the major shopping in St. Thomas is along the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie. Some of the shops occupy old pirate warehouses and buildings that are hundreds of years old. You’ll also find street vendors at a designated area called “Vendors Plaza” on the waterfront downtown. Fridays are usually the busiest day with the most cruise ships, so avoid shopping on Friday if possible. Believe it or not, the K-Mart within walking distance of the cruise ship terminal has fantastic prices on liquor, including Cruzan rums, which are produced on St. Croix, so we recommend stocking up on liquor there. If you’re looking for products made in the Virgin Islands, focus on shell jewelry, carved calabash bowls, straw brooms, woven baskets, and handmade dolls. There’s so many shops here that even the most experienced shopper will be impressed!
